Anthea Turner tried to fight off a robber who snatched a pounds 25,000 Rolex watch from a friend’s wrist as they sat in a car.

She was in the front passenger seat of a Range Rover driven by her boyfriend Grant Bovey in London’s West End when the man struck just after midnight on Sunday.

The victim was millionaire businessman Mr Ivor Jacobs, an old school friend of Turner, who was sitting in the back of the car with his two daughters.

Turner, from Stone, Staffordshire, tried to punch the robber when he clambered into the Range Rover, which was waiting at traffic lights on St Martin’s Lane, and reached across the two girls, aged 12 and eight.

“We thought maybe he was after the girls,” she said. “They were screaming – none of us knew what was happening. We were all just trying to get him out of the car.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said he could not confirm the identities of any of those in the Range Rover, as the victim had asked to remain anonymous.

Officers believe the suspect could have followed the group from a West End theatre and then to a restaurant before striking.

There has been a string of attacks by so-called “Rolex robbers” in London over the past three years, with previous victims including Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone and actress Britt Ekland.

But Scotland Yard said tonight there was no reason to link this attack to any others. The victim, believed to be Mr Jacobs, from Ockbrook, near Derby, had the gold-faced diamond-encrusted Rolex ripped from his wrist after the attacker opened the kerb-side rear door of the car louis vuitton wallets.

He clambered over the two girls, slightly burning one of them with his lit cigarette, a Scotland Yard spokeswoman added.

Officers think the man might have waited in the foyer of the Cambridge Theatre, where the group had watched the musical Grease, followed them to the Planet Hollywood restaurant in nearby Coventry Street and waited for them to get into the car.

The suspect was described as black, aged about 25, 6ft tall and thin. He wore a navy blue Puffa jacket, a dark blue jumper and dark blue jeans. He was seen running away towards the Seven Dials area of nearby Covent Garden chanel bags.
